Charles Peter BUCK

Information sent to T.Mason on 13 Feb 2007 by Frankie Coulter.

His father lived in Woodford County Kentucky until 1830. Moved to Montgomery County, Tennessee and settled on a farm 6 miles from Clarksville, Tenn directly on the road to Lafayette, Ky. Named his farm Meadow Grove.  He was a graduate of both the literary and law departments of the Univ. of Louisville and was fluent in both French and German. After marrying, Charles Peter and Letitia moved to Hickman, Ky where he developed a successful law practice. During the civil war Capt, Buck served in the confederate army as a doctor where he contracted chronic amoebic diarrhea which left him invalid for some time after the war. Letitia was captured when she tried to smuggle medicine to him through the Federal lines at Harpers' Ferry, Va. She suffered prolonged imprisonment which had an adverse effect on her health. In the Fall of 1865 they moved to Johnson County, Missouri along with the parents of Charles and a brother and sister of Letitia's, Henry Catlett Churchill and Frances Emily Churchill. A few years later they moved on to Butler in Bates County, Mo where Charles practiced law for several years. However because both were in poor health they visited his sister Samuella Price Buck and her husband Joseph Keith in Mississippi County, Ark to determine if the weather would be better for their health. Arriving on March 10, 1880, Letitia took sick and died 6 months later leaving Charles to raise 5 children, 3 of whom were very young. His sister, Ella Keith, assisted him in raising the children. Though broken in fortune, career, and health by the Civil war, as well as losing his wife, he was ever kind, affectionate and cheerful and as long as he lived worshipped the memory of his departed wife Letitia L Churchill. He died in the home of his son, Churchill M. Buck and was buried beside his wife in Chism Cemetery in Huffman, Arkansas which is today totally under the water of the Mississippi river as it changed course.
