From the Ft. Wayne Weekly Journal, Thursday, September 12, 1895:

"At his home near Sheldon, in Pleasant Township, occurred the death Sunday last of Charles S. Foulks, an old resident of Allen County. The deceased was well known throughout the county, having held the office of Justice of the Peace in Pleasant Township for many years. Mr. Foulks was born in Columbia County, Ohio, January 30, 1821. He was reared on a farm and resided in Ohio until 1873, when he moved to Allen County, where he has lived ever since."

"He was married 44 years ago to Miss Hattie Johnson, who survives him. Besides the widow, there are seven children, all living. They are Mrs. Letitia Gray, Mrs. Maggie Woods, Mrs. Buskirk and Mrs. Lizzie Moses, and three sons, Albert G., of the city Police Force, J. Morgan, of the Ft. Wayne Electric Railway, and George E., who is employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. Mr. Foulks was esteemed by his neighbors and by all who knew him as a man of more than ordinaryability and of strict integrity, and sterling worth."

"The funeral will be held at 10 o'clock tomorrow at the Fairview Methodist Church. The interment will be at the cemetery near Ossian."

Military: Charles Morgan Foulks served during the War of 1812 as a Private in Capt. William Blackburn's Company.Ref. p.136 Roster of Ohio Soldiers in War Of 1812.

Education: Greersburg Academy 1802-1902, Darlington, Darlington Twp.,, ,Beaver Co.,Pa. An old register for the years 1816, 1817, & 1818 lists the following students;... Morgan Fulks...

Occupation: He was a great student and served as the only school teacher in the township. In addition, to teaching school, he became a Justice of the Peace and in the early days was looked upon as the "legal advisor" for folks of the district lying North of the Ohio River. He built a one kiln pottery on the banks of Long's Run, near Calcutta, Ohio. There he maufactured a line of yellow ware which was hauled overland to Beaver Creek near Fredericktown, and then floated in boats down the creek to the Ohio River thence to different markets. He later became County Commissioner and it was then that St. Clair Twp. first began its activity for improved roads. C.M. Foulks was County Commissioner in 1859, 1860 and 1861. Residence: Charles Morgan Foulks retained the original homestead of his father, William (the founder of Foulkstown which was renamed Calcutta.) The log house of Charles M.Foulks was a 2 story, ten room house with a long porch the entire length of the log house located on Sprucevale Road.

Military; Per Minabelle Summy Foulks, served in Civil War, Twelfth Ohio Volunteer Cavalary, Company I and was discharged by order June 23, 1864. The war affected his mind. He was committed to private asylum by his father. From which he escaped, and was never heard from again.

Probate: Columbiana County Probate Records case # 7371, Doc 4, p.199. Insanity of James M. Foulks Warrant to Convey to County Infirmiary 8 Apr 1870. James ran away from the County Infirmary shortly after admittance and was returned by Daniel H. Foulks December 1873. Ref: Microfilm 929.3 Co. in Salem Library, Salem, Ohio. Sometime after his return to the Infirmary, James ran away one more time never to be heard from again. (Within the family, some said that he ran away to California.)
