Notes

George J. DOWNING

George and Kitty Jane farmed near Athens, a settlement about ten miles southeast of Lexington. Her mother Elizabeth Downton lived with them in the 1850 census.  The couple may have inherited her parents' farm adjoining Richmond Rd.

CHILDREN: Birth dates from the Darst, 11-29-1994.  KHC manuscript #2 lists five children not on the Darst list: Luther, Fannie (married W. C. Coons), Ella, Silas and James.  It does not include Richard, Thomas, Francis and Catherine. The spouses and children come from #2.  Information on Catherine comes from KHC manuscript #3. That on William comes from One Name Study site, above, but manuscript #3 says that Alice Hukell is from Bourbon.  Died before 1920 comes from Lexington Herald, Nov. 27, 1920, p. 5, obituary of George Preston Downing which lists his living siblings.

Catherine (Kitty) Jane DOWNTON

FUNERAL: Noted in the Lexington Transcript, Nov. 27, 1889, p. 3.

NAME: Lexington Herald, Feb. 7, 1929, p. 8, obituary for their son Joseph W. gives her maiden name as Downs. All other mentions say Downton.

Richard DOWNING

Lexington Leader, Apr. 10, 1901, p. 5, reports funeral services for Richard Downing at his residence, 156 E. Third St.  No other Richard Downing is likely to have died then.

Elizabeth (Bettie) DOWNING

DEATH: Lexington Herald, Sept. 17, 1935.

James DOWNING

DEATH: [HYPERLINK  http://local.lexpublib.org/detail.cfm?counter=60311 ]
Subject Heading: DOWNING, JAMES
Source: Observer and Reporter.
Date: December 23, 1865
Location: p. 3 col. 4.
Abstract: Died at his home on 19th James Downing at age of 57.

Joseph WINGATE Jr

DEATH: Date is from Lexington Press, Jul. 31, 1871, p. 4.  Apparently the Press had considerable political differences with Wingate as the story said it behooves us to praise the good and ignore the faults of a person on his death..  The Press was notably sympathetic to the Confederate cause and it is likely Wingate supported the Union.

He served as Mayor of Lexington during 1863-65.  He lived on the west side of Mulberry St. (now Limestone) near 3rd St.

The residence is from Williams' Lexington City Directory for 1864-65, p. 92. (Lexington: Williams & Co., 1864).  (LexLib 8-02).  Kentucky History Center Manuscript #3 on daughter Venetia.  The George C. Downing letter of Mar. 1, 1937, cited above, lists seven other children (two are illegible) following Venetia: Reuben Anderson Wingate, Sarah Hart Wingate, Susan May Wingate, Robert J. Wingate, and Ellen Wingate.  However the first two are given 1823 and 1825 birth dates, ones before the marriage.  So Prof. Canon is dubious about whether those listed are really  Joseph and Deborah's children.  The letter, along with several others in the file mostly about unrelated ancestors, is written in cramped handwriting that makes for difficult and uninviting reading.

Deborah STONE

Death is from Lexington Leader, May 27, 1897, p. 6.  Her age is given as 91.
