RESEARCHER: Information sent to T.Mason from Juli Dalton on 23Feb2002. "Nathaniel Burden didn't die til after the 1860 Census, as he is listed there with his wife, Sarah, and children, David C., 21, Sarah, 16, George W., 12, and Nathaniel, 8. By this census record, Nathaniel could not have been born in 1841, but in 1851. George W. and Nathaniel are also listed in the same household with their mother, niece, and married sister in the 1870 Census."
Taken from San Saba County History 1856-1986 submitted by Loraine Duey Roberds
Nathaniel Burden was born in Tennesee about 1798. His wife Sarah was born in Virginia about 1808. They married and moved to Arkansas and lived there a few years before moving to Texas in the 1840's. Later they moved to San Saba County in the mid 1850's. He built the Burden Hotel before 1860. It was the fourth building to be built in San Saba. It was also the first stone building to be erected. The little building is a two story structure and is still standing west of the courthouse. It is in need of a lot of loving care. It was used as a hotel for several years. In the 1860 census four Burden children are listed. They are David D., Sarah, George W., and Nathaniel. (note: George Wright Burden, aged 21, is also listed)
Listed in 1860 census was WT Burden, wife, Clarissa, and three children: Mary Ann, Susan, and Jane. WT Burden was the son of Nathaniel Burden. He was a grocerman. Nathaniel had a daughter who married Eli Freestone, first sheriff of San Saba County. Some of their descendants are Ralph W. Collins, Malcom Allison Collins and Juli Collins Dalton, all of Austin. Possibly other descendants live in Austin.
Nathaniel Burden died sometime between 1860 and 1870. He was buried in the first City Cemetery, which is now Rogan Field. His remains were never exhumed. He still sleeps beneath the sod of the football field.
