" I am Paul D Startz, the grandson of Clarence Startz. My grandfather Clarence Startz married Ima Love Fenton in 1986. Though Clarence never divorced my grandmother, Maxine Startz (who died in 1986, buried in Anadarko), Clarence and Ima lived as a “married couple” most of their adult lives. Clarence operated his own bus line from Chickasha to Lawton/Altus. Maxine lived in Chickasha; Ima/Clarence lived in Altus. I think it is just amazing that Clarence and Ima lived together for so many years in a loving relationship and the rest of the Startz family never really knew about it, or at least no one ever said anything. But Clarence always supported Maxine, and I will always be appreciative of this aspect of my grandfather.
After Maxine died in 1986, Ima and Clarence married quickly after, they had little time left. I immediately accepted my new step grandmother and never held anything against Ima or my grandfather. At their age, and Ima’s emphysema, with her very limited time left, I felt compelled to accept them both and their relationship as my new family. Ima, a person who had always been there in the background, someone who knew me well through my grandfather, someone who I never knew was there. You probably could have written a book about this life-long double relationship."
