Kate married first a Mr. Richard James Mannon Gaines. From that union only two children were born. Samual Gaines (Uncle Sammy) and Aunt Annie (Mrs. E.E. Baty). This Baty is pronounced BAYTEE. I believe Annie's name was Elizabeth because when I was in high school I asked Mama if I could adopt Elizabeth as my middle name since "all" the girls had one. She laughted & replied, "Yes, if it'll make you happy. Your aunt Annie will be pleased." We visited Mr. & Mrs. Baty in Colorado Springs, Colo. when I was about 6 years old & that, as far as I can recall, is the only time I ever saw Aunt Annie. But I remember her --- and that visit ---- very clearly. Later she and Uncle Ed moved to Hawaii & he was a professor in the electrical engineering department of a college. Aunt Annie died there. Later he returned to Long Beach, Calif. I visited him and his two sons (Roy and Clyde) and their families in 1930.
Mama love both Aunt Annie and Uncle Sammy. She adored the latter. He was more than a brother (really a half brother) because he was so much older and he partly took the place of her father, who, I've been told, was away from home frequently. Uncle Sammy had 3 children: Ewell, Katherine (Mrs. Russell Reeves of Memphis, Tenn.) and Mannen, of North Carolina. Both of the later have children. My 3 cousins visited us quite often as we were growing up & I spent many happy vacations with Aunt Florence and the rest of the family in Texarkana. There are many pictures of those visits in my kodak album.
