Rebecca Cromwell 18 (probably 1st wife of William)
John 6 months." Bradley Canon states, "The children of Rebecca Cromwell and William Downing almost certainly all were born in Harford County, Maryland, and accompanied William when, following Rebecca's death, he came to Lexington around 1787-1790.".2Register of the Kentucky Historical Society, Downing Family of England, Maryland and Virginia, The, 1908, p.80. 6: 67 (KHS 8-80). "He moved to Kentucky in the fall of 1791, most likely accompanied by all his children. They left on October 23rd and probably took the Cumberland Road to Wheeling, Virginia (now West Virginia), and then a boat or flatboat down the Ohio River, landing in Limestone (now Maysville), Kentucky, on December 1st. From there he went on to Lexington where his father had been living for about eight years. It is not clear where he lived initially, but at some point he bought land on Todds Rd. about five miles southeast of what was then Lexington."
