BIOGRAPHY: [HYPERLINK  http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bartlett/bartlett-nicholas.htm ] Mary moved to Shakertown to live with a daughter after she was widowed.

RESEARCHER-DEATH: Information sent to T.Mason on 4 Jan 2005 by Steve Treanor "Lists death date as 25 Dec 1863."

They moved to Kentucky shortly after their marriage. In 1807 they moved to Illinois, locating near the old village of Milton in the Wood River Settlement and in 1808 moving to Pin Oak Township, east of Edwardsville, in Madison County.  Nicholas and the three other men began the settlement in 1809.   He acquired a considerable amount of property, served as a ranger during Indian conflicts, helped build Ft. Russell, north of Edwardsville, and served in the Black Hawk War with three sons, Martin, Nicholas, and Jesse. It was common in those days for the settlers to serve in the military conflicts to protect their homes.   Pin Oak Township was a notable community as in 1819 Edward Coles of Virginia, having freed his slaves bought a great deal of land in the community and gave each of the freed male adults a quarter section of land.  These original land owners prospered and later subdivided their land so that others could join them.  The colony grew to about 300 members at its peak.  From James Alonzo Matthews, Jr.,  Pearce, Bartlett, Matthews, Smart, and Allied Families: "'Uncle Joe,' as he was familiarly called, often related that he attended school only eight days, but after that, by close application and intuition, he qualified himself quite creditably.  He was the third assessor and treasurer of Madison County (terms in 1827 & 1830), and he held other offices of trust and responsibility. It has been stated of him that he was a man of domestic habits and that he did not even visit the neighboring city of Saint Louis, though it was less than twenty-five miles distant, for forty-four years previous to his death on January 1, 1864. The horse ferry had just been established about the time of his first trip there in 1819, and his surviving friends state that, having but little curiosity for new or strange things, he never went to see a steamboat or railroad during his life, preferring to devote his whole time to domestic affairs and his books. He was a man of excellent mind, well stored with information, especially in politics. In his day, he was considered a walking history of Tennessee, where many of his friends and early pioneers had emigrated from during the first settlement of the country. He had a well selected library and also a file of the papers then published in Illinois and Tennessee." Joseph was the Madison County Justice of the Peace from 1835 to 1848. In 1850 he was living in Madison County with his wife Patience and grandson (son of William Royal Bartlett and Lucy Thompson) John Wesley Bartlett. In 1860 he was living with Jesse Bartlett's son (his grandson Joseph and his wife Nancy in Madison County."

1059. Nancy Ann Overstreet

MARRIAGE-RESEARCH-QUESTION: Date of 29 Dec 1797 would make wife age 15 at marriage!

WILL: January 1824; Overton County, Tennessee Deed Book I, p. 156;  William Overstreet, Sr. gave Nancy Neely, due to parental love and affection, 3 slaves. Source states that Nancy is still living as of January 1841 and lives in Overton Co., Tennessee. Transaction witnessed by John Overstreet and Hawkins Neely.

IGI information list Nancy Overstreet marrying Robert Neeley on 29 Dec 1797.

1060. William Overstreet Jr.

WILL-RESEARCH: Overton County, Tennessee Deed Book J, page 391.  Another source states that the Deed Book is K.  Need to check both sources again for correct deed book.  The will was dated 2 Oct 1847 and was probated 6 Jan 1848.

1762. Mary Liza Overstreet

PARENT-QUESTION: Pixy-Lynn reflects: Because of the differences in the reading of the will for William Overstreet Jr., I still do not believe that Mary Liza is the daughter of William Jr.  I believe that she was his daughter-in-law and the daughter of William and Elizabeth Chilton of Kentucky.  The Sevier family members who have read the will have put a different interpretation to the wording of the will...They say that she was William Jr.'s daughter who married William Chilton.  Even though the wording of the will states that she is his daughter, the wording and context of the statement led me to believe that he stated as such because of his love and affection toward his daughter-in-law.  I invite those who wish to read the will to read the document with that in mind.

RESEARCH: pg. 124 of 1880 Clay Co., TN census book has a listing for a William Chilton with a wife whose name is spelled an E.. This may be this family, Liza being a nickname for Elizabeth.

William Chilton

Census: Thought I found his family in the 1880 Clay Co., TN census. However, his wife stated that her parents were both from Kentucky.  I know that her parents were from Virginia.

1765. Lafayette Overstreet

SOURCE: John Sevier (aka Jack) kept a ledger of names and dates.  His notation on Lafayette stated that Lafayette died 20 August 1849, age 24 years, 3 mo, 5 days.

1766. Joel Ousley Overstreet

CENSUS: 1850 Overton Co., Tennessee Census as being 18 years old.  His personal worth was $3,000.  An inventory of his estate can be found: Overton Co., Tennessee, Inventories of Estates, June 1848-Apr 1861, Microfilm #21, page 169.  John Sevier was his administrator.  This John Sevier was the one married to Joel's aunt, Rhoda Overstreet Sevier, not his grandfather, the John Sevier that was governor of Tennessee.

1061. John Overstreet

WILL: dated 4 May 1834.  A copy of it can be found: Tennessee State Supreme Court Records, Middle Tennessee, Box 45, John Burksdale vs John Sevier, dated 1855.

MARRIAGES: Pixy-Lynn Morgan indicates found a marriage entry for a John Overstreet who married an Elizabeth Henry in Rhea County, Tennessee on 13 Sep 1810. Elizabeth Henry was the second wife of John Overstreet. Don't know who the first wife was.  She would have been the mother of Joannah W. Elizabeth Henry only had one child, William Preston Overstreet.  Martha Holman was the third wife and she was the mother of his third child, Rebecca Borden Overstreet. The entry for John Overstreet and Elizabeth Henry marriage came from Early East Tennessee Marriages, Vol. 1--Grooms, by Byron & Barbara Sistler, c1987, pg. 279....John Overstreet married Elizabeth Henry 13 Sep 1810 in Rhea Co., Tennessee.

William Preston Overstreet stated in the Federal Census records that both of his parents were born in Virginia.  Since the Holmans were from North Carolina, this information tends to confirm the idea that William and his sister, Joanah, were children from a "first" marriage situation. However, due to the Rhea Chancery Court records concerning the estate of John Henry, Elizabeth's father, we now know that Joannah is not Elizabeth's child.

1997 Sep.  Found proof of two marriages for John Overstreet. Microfilm 0985333 from Salt Lake Library. Jackson County, Tennessee Chancery Court Records. First folder, Overstreet Holman, et al vs Thomas H. Butler, et al; admr. to Henry Sadler. Deposition of Nancy Burris. She stated "I live four miles from John Overstreet.  I have known the family before his death and into the present time." She was asked, "State how many children John Overstreet had at the time of his death and how many of them were by his last wife, Martha." Her answer: "He had three W. P., Joannah, and Rebecca.  Two by the first marriage and one by the last. "I know from the Tennessee Supreme Court Records that John (Jack) Sevier, admr. of John Overstreet's estate and brother-in-law to John, stated that Rebecca was Martha's child. It is now apparent that when John Overstreet moved from Rhea County to Overton County he had a wife, Elizabeth, and two children, Joannah and William Preston.  Why they let the situation continue where people were led to believe that Joannah was Elizabeth's child isn't known at this time. We are at a loss as to who is Joannah's mother.

John B. Barksdale

The computer makes a valid conclusion in stating that John Barksdale was not of parenting age when his children were born.  Records available state that he died when he was 72 years old.  His last child was born when he was 63 years old.  As of this writing, I can only report on previous information obtained from compiled sources.

Elizabeth Henry

NAME: Pixy-Lynn believes that Mrs. John Overstreet was....Elizbeth Henry...a John Overstreet married an Elizabeth Henry in Rhea Co., TN on 13 Sep 1810.  The time frame is right, and it is likely that John traveled to the southern part of Tennessee with his Borden relatives as they dispersed from Knox Co., TN during the period 1806-1812.  John does not show up in the Overton Co., TN area until after his father and brother do.

1063. Rebecca Overstreet

CHILDREN: Knox Co. TN Court Minutes, Vol. 17, p68. Deposition taken of William Tipton, concerning her children.  The deposition was dated 23 Jan 1841. Mr. Tipton stated.. Deposition given by William Tipton.  He states that William and Rebecca had two children: John Sherrell and Elizabeth Sherrell.  He stated that Elizabeth Sherrell lived in Monroe Co. (TN) and that John Sherrell lives in either MS or AL.  The deposition was dated 23 Jan 1841.
